Default Hardened Valves or Soft Please help...

Hi, can anyone please clear up a confusion that I have. I've been told by 1 source that I have Soft valves in my 89 745 2.3 Turbo B230ET (eng no 0000000000001287 first reg 16/05/89) and another hardened valves. As you can guess this has left me confused as to whether I should or should not be using valve additive for my car when using super unleaded.

That should be ok on unleaded, im sure it was only the earlier cars that had any kind of problem with only being able to run on unleaded petrol but someone with more knowlege than me will clarify pretty soon!

It's normally the valve seats which come in hard/soft varieties. AFAIK all OHC redblock engines have hard seats from the factory. Cars with redblocks were sold in California which has had all the emissions stuff (and presumably unleaded fuel?) since the 70s...so I guess they used the same seats in everything.

cheers

Thanks, so basically if I stick to super unleaded but over 98 (some is 97Ron) for the octane rating I'm going to be alright? However if for good measure I add a little additive every now and then I'm going to be ok

You can run a 740TI on 95 octane as far as I'm aware. The manual specifies 97 octane, but I'm not aware that the drop in octane hurts you at all until you start looking at elevated boost. I'd not bother with the additive...as far as I'm aware it's simply not necessary with these engines. I'd save yourself a few bob

cheers

Cheers James, my manual specifies 98 4star hence the confusion... It will definately save a few bob because I paid £8.99 for 500ml that gives just under 10 fill ups.
