Default Whining fuel pump

Had the fuel guage at the emptiest I've ever had today (needle just inside red area). Also I pulled into petrol station I heard a distinct whining noise coming for the rear of car (not present 30 miles previous when I left home).
My question; is this normal when the pump is having to work harder to get fuel from a low level or is it a sign on worn out pump? I have both in tank and main pump ready to fit but neem putting it off thinking all was fine!

You need to check that the in tank pump is working , the noise is air getting in the main pump under the floor .. You might find teh rubber pipe on the in tank pump has a hole too .

My pump has always been noisy when low on fuel. It's been 8 years since purchase and 70,000 miles later, and it still works so I have left it. If I fill the tank it stinks of fuel sometimes inside as quite possibly the tank is holed. This fuel smell has happened in the last 6 months.

I now don't fully fill. It's my second car now, so only does low mileage so live with it.
