Default D3 Soot Filter Full

Hey there,

I recently bought an used 2014 V40 Cross Country. It has the D3 2.0 engine and geartronic gearbox.

Thursday i drove 600km at 130kmh with no issues. Over the week end i did some short runs, and finally today (sunday) while drive to the town (road going down, -5% or so) the Soot Filter message popped up, and just after that the engine system, maintenance required system came too.

I drove back from town, which took approx. 40 minutes on a mountain road, so kinda constantly over 2k rpm.
As soon as the DPF message popped up i had like 70BHP instead of 150. I am wondering if there is any chance the regeneration process could be working, or if it just means it is either faulty or if this is a sensor issue.

Thanks in advance for your insights.

Hi there,

Not sure about the relevance to this topic, but I used to do a 18 mile commute each way Mon-Fri, mostly on dual carriage ways and country roads, which I have never had a problem with the soot filter full, but recently I have changed to a new job meaning my daily commute is only around 3 miles each way, and I am quite worried that this is not the best situation for a diesel, but I do make occasional long runs to London etc.at least once a month.

Would it be a wiser choice to switch to a diesel, or would any one know if the D3 tends to clog up easily ?

My biggest worry is really the DPF which I doubt short city driving will do it any good.

If you still drive every once in a while outside cities you wont have any issue. BUT it is totally stupid to use a diesel for such short drives. Take your bike, go on foot, or buy a gasoline engine car

When the SOOT FILTER FULL message comes up you really must go for a drive at 50 mph or so for say half an hour , no need to rev it or go faster , when conditions are right it will regenerate and all will be well . The problem starts when you ignore the message , eventually as you have found, it will go into limp mode with an " ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED" message to protect the Particle filter , at this stage you need to get it to a dealer who can force a regeneration on the premises .. Ignore that and you will need a new particle filter .. This is in the handbook ..

You could have a faulty monitoring system of course but unlikely , the soot filter has clogged due to the car being shunted around with lots of cold starts before you bought it perhaps .

Turned out to be a foulty Lambda sensor which made the regen impossible.
