Which completely conflicts with everything and everyone and what's in the car now. I might look at it this weekend. Put some seal repair in and change to Pentosin and just use it til it dies. (Or doesnt) can't sound or get any worse than death.

Volvo still haven't given me an answer. Although it is cheaper having it off the road..............

Has the reservoir swollen or developed any leaks around the the seam at the top of the tank? You write that yours was manufactured March 1998, that would seem to rule out a cross-over model. What year is shown by the code on the VIN plate?

If the wrong fluid has been put in it damages the seals thoughout the system and the tank swells up developing a curve at the back where it sits on the coolant reservoir. The red mineral based ATF damages seals designed for the synthetic system, in the same way the green pentosin will damage the seals designed for the mineral ATF.
It really is a Catch 22 situation, have you any idea how long the red stuff has been in the system?

No it hasn't swollen. Just really really noisy and grinds going left. Maybe less than a year. But I don't drive it. I struggle to put 2000 miles a year on it.

I've ordered some Lucas oil sealer and Pentosin. I'll ring again for Volvo but not holding out. One more flush won't harm. I'm happy for it to sit where it is at the end of the day as driving it is purely pleasure and never a need.

It is annoying having all this conflicting information. Especially from Volvo.

I was told by the local Volvo dealer if the reservoir is on the coolant tank it should be the green fluid - given the date of manufacture I would have thought it should be the green stuff. Is the grinding coming from the rack or is coming from the stops? If the stop hasn't been greased you'll get a grinding noise on full lock - some models also have a small nylon buffer about 1 x 3 cm on the stop which falls off over time - you could try greasing the stops.

I'll take another look and flush again.

The grinding is actually and internal and is resistance on the steering wheel. I've had the stops greased and there was no concern there. Signs of leakage from the tank at some point but not now. It's just the noise and whining. It's a real head Turner.

The End of the day in not going to make it any worse. Appreciate all input though

Update.... drained again and topped with CHF. Not much improvement at the moment. Put a new reservoir and pipe on anyway, not using the rack rebuild kit I don't have the time and price to have it done was way to expensive. Weighing up options (again) from here and to be honest I think it'll just stay parked up for now.
