Default Carbon canister

I bought my current V70 T5 a little while ago. I have discovered that the carbon canister is not connected. When you connect it, the engine warning light comes on (sorry do not know code). So it is currently disconnected. I had an old canister off my ex 97 V70 2.5SEe but it is not the right one. There is a puffing noise with it disconnected on occasions.

Can these canisters be resurrected or do I need to get a new one ? Have searched online without success. Local dealer says no longer available.

Many thanks
David
