Thank you for your prompt response.

Apologies for my ignorance but as the egr and pipework were so clogged up and because of the exhaust gas error code, I assumed the valve was at fault. When my friend cleared all the carbon deposits off, the car instantly ran better with better mpg.

Am I barking up the wrong tree here? Could a forced regen help solve my problems?

You need to know what the problem is first , The fault code will help there , Best get it to a volvo dealer who knows what he is doing . These EGR systems are very robust , Sooted pipework is normal not too much to worry about unless the cause has been ignored and left , the excessive soot will built up then .
Particle filter temperature sensors were a bit troublesome on 2010 - 2012 D5 ..

Thank you. I think I'll have to take the hit and spend £140 for Volvo to diagnose the problem.

What I don't understand is why the problem went away and the car run so much better when the egr and pipework was cleaned, if it's not an egr related issue?

It should never have got clogged as much i guess . but some problem has caused excess soot .It 's not the fact that the car never leaves the City and has an average speed of less than 30 mph for weeks is it ? If so it would come up with a message such as "Soot Filter Full" in which case you should take it for a 20 minute run at about 50 mph to regenerate , no hard driving is needed just a normal run at about 50 mph . If you ignore that , the car will go into limp home more to protect the particle filter . Ignore again and you will need a new particle filter .

You're not far off that the car does spend quite a lot of time in the city at ponderous London speeds. However I do go out on the motorway once a week for a short burst so this is probably the reason why I've never had any dpf related error messages.

The only fault code I have ever had has involved the exhaust gases. This coupled with the carbon build up leads me to an egr issue.

The other thing I have noticed is the engine coolant has had to be topped up more than you would expect and there appears to be some signs of leakage when the coolant cap is unscrewed. Don't know if this is related or not.

Default V60 D4 VEA EGR Cooler and Modified Pipework (p04d900 code)

New to the site but found it via Google. I own a 2015 V60 D4 VEA engine in the R-design spec. Got to 20,000 miles and the "check engine" light came on. Thought it was maybe just due a service and seeing as the service pack came with the car I had it serviced. With nothing to report from the Volvo dealer.

2 weeks later the dreaded Snail appeared on the dash "Reduced Engine Performance" I turned the engine off and it cleared. A few more weeks went by and again whilst on the motorway the snail popped up. By turning the engine off it simply cleared it.

Took it back to the dealer and it came back with the code

egr cooler and modified pipework (p04d900 code logged)

The dealer didn't refer to any on going issue with the D4 VEA engines but simply said it was covered on the warranty. If not under warranty I was looking at £550 !!

Other than this no issues with the vehicle. It is a belting engine. Just be careful if you have this engine. If it's still under warranty I'd get it checked out to be on the safe side.

Got the dreaded Amber Warning on my V90 today.
Hopefully, it is just a bit of soot on one of the Sensors?
Do not think I could live with another Volvo that could be developing the same problems, that I had with the V60.

Fortunately, the V90 is booked in for its first service next week and have informed the Service Manager that additional work now needs to be carried out.

Most interesting. Many of us had 'assumed' the dreaded EGR problems had been solved. Please keep us updated, especially if it appears the fault is similar to the 'XC60' problems.

My D4 VEA is coming up for 3 years old in a few weeks, and I've not had any EGR issues so far, touchwood.

My mileage is relatively low at 23,000, so I suppose it could still happen yet. I don't fancy a potential £500+ bill in a few weeks/months.

Was there talk a few months back of someone getting the work done outside of warranty as a "goodwill gesture", or am I just hoping that I remember that ?

If this is what Volvo are doing, does anyone have a feel for how long after the 3 year anniversary they are likely to continue this, just a few weeks, or still at say the 4 year mark ?

Wondering if I should take out an extended warranty, but would rather not if the EGR issue was still going to be covered.
