Thumbs up Great tip still v relevant

Hi Guys
I went to look at a V40 Bi Fuel today, had lots of work done to it, I checked the bottom hose clip and guess what.....Rusty as hell! The seller was shocked when I told him. I did give you guys the credit tho, Lol. I did buy the car, we collect it on Tuesday. We are downsizing from an Omega estate, nice car but fuel bills,,,,ouch! I had a little 360 before a nice plumb colour with grubby beige interior, lol then a 360 gls, so cheap to run. Thanks for all the advice.

just wanted to say thanks, got my new (2002) V40 T4 checked over today & got the timing belt done, ask the mechanic to check the lower hose clamp, sure enough when I went to pick it up he said it was very rusty and just about fell off when he went to loosen it, uprated clip from rufe fitted

This forum is a lifesaver!

Having recently purchased my 2002 S40 T4 I decided to give the car a good going over and steam cleaned the whole of the underside, removed all the wheels and cleaned off the hubs etc, all was good.

Then I got to removing the lower plastic guard and sure enough the clip was on its last legs. Now fitted a good quality replacement.

Did a bit of cavity waxing etc once the underside had dried off.

I have to say though these models don't seem to be as well anti-corrosion coated as my 1998 S70 T5 I recently sold!

Thumbs up Volvo forum saves the day again!

While putting in some much needed attention on my V40, thought I'd check this out. Bingo, the rusty radiator hose clip -almost- stirkes again!

New clip on order, will be changing on arrival.

yeah i have one lossing water at the moment runing dry cant seem to see were water is going because its not in the oil ordered a new water pump just relised that i mioght as well change the timing belt you got any

hi all newbie to the forum, same thing happened to us on motorway yesterday, smoke and steam billowing out the front, bottom hose jubilee clip rotted away on radiator end of bottom hose , no coolant , result head gasket blown and probable head warped requiring skimming or replacement, any suggestions for a supplier of recon heads....?

Default Snapped screwhead

Bought a new clip, car parked on street outside with space in front, nice day so set to work. I can't raise the car but there's enough room to undo the plastic shield - you only need to unscrew 4 - 5 nuts to get at the pipe.

I would recommend covering the old clip in WD40 or similar, I didn't and the f&!^%g screw snapped! I dare not drive far as although it only turned a few times and feels ok I don't know how secure it is.

Any recommendations? I can't really get at it with a hacksaw for fear of going through the pipe, as I can't raise the car there is a garage 1/3 of a mile down the hill from me I may try and drive to tomorrow morning.

just loosen the coolant bottle cap so no pressure builds up , you should be ok to get to the garage ...

Local garage charged £24.80 (min charge) and changed the coolant whilst they were at it.

So yes it can be done without raising the car IF the old clip behaves itself, if like me you can't raise the car make sure you have a plan B!

All done now and peace of mind, the old clip was badly rusted through.

...well this has just happened to me, i always keep the info centre on the engine temp. as to me this is more important than all the other things......i was just 4miles from home, i looked at the temp. and it said 105 so i thought it can`t reach that number unless somethings not quite right, i thought that the auto fan was faulty as i had just stopped at some traffic lights anyhow it just kept on climbing slowly 106,107,108 then just as i got on my drive it was 117 turned if off and the auto fan was running looked at the front passenger wheel and the arch was covered in wet hot antifreeze........i was praying it would just be the clip and after removing the undertray saw this in the pictures the clip has sprung apart as it had rusted through and let the coolant out because the hose had been blown off......well this clip has lasted 13yrs so i put a good quality one back on but not the Volvo stainless one....been to Volvo for the antifreeze £13 so just going to finish the job off....
