Studded tyres on rims
Hi all, I have set of Gislaved studded winter tyres left over from my 245 days, I have an 850 now and they sadly don't fit. They are 185 x 14 tyres on Volvo 14" steel rims (5 stud) I dont think they went more than 2000 miles in 3 or 4 winters, totaly amazing grip on ice or snow. The wheels are a bit rusty, nothing that a wire brush and some silver paint wouldn't improve!! Uplift preferred, from central Edinburgh. £140.00 OVNO ?? Any takers?

No. Studded tyres are not legal in the UK, as they will cause damage to the road surface. As per highway code, any wheels/tyres fitted to a vehicle, must not be of such a condition as to damage the road surface.

There is a company on Ebay that will uplift and deliver wheels/tyres all over the UK for £28.00 for four!! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ALLOY-WHEEL-CO...item5638534c52
I never had any bother with damaging the road surface, more likely the potholes will damage the tyres, anyway if you are using them on ice or snow (or mud) the tyre/studs will not make contact with the road surface. If the roads are clear of ice and snow the studs, which hardly protrude just press into the tread. Studded winter tyres are required by law from about October/November until March in Scandinavia and varying times in other European countries. Is the Uk falling behind again?? Jim |

Winter tyres
Just to let you know that these are now sold, thanks for your interest and comments.
I did phone the local traffic police today and was assured that there was nothing in the 'Contructions and Use' that prohibits the use of studded winter tyres in the UK! Jim |

He said that studded tyres would be included in this clause and would thus be illegal if used in inappropriate conditions (i.e. where there is no ice or snow) if they damage the road surface. Basically it seems that they're not prohibited but a traffic officer could give you some grief if you kept the wheels on and weren't driving on snowy/icy roads. I think the same principle applies to snow chains - fine on snow and ice but take them off as soon as you hit cleared roads.
