V40 Drive shaft or automatic transmission?
Hi as newby I will do my best to give all relevant info.
I have a loud clicking noise which has been diagnosed by a local garage as due to a worn driveshaft. However a relative who runs a garage in another part of the country is concerned that it could be the automatic transmission. Mileage 195,000. Auto/ABS 1948 petrol. Clicking worst when not under load - for example going down a gentle descent. Power on noise goes, also with braking. V40 X reg - 2001. Gearbox AW55/50/51SN. Can anyone tell me how it is possible to diagnose clearly where the problem lies please. |

Drive shaft approx 1hr to replace
and cheaper than a gearbox. far more likely to be a CV than gearbox unless oil probs in gearbox. have you checked the GB oil? if it still red or now a brown colour smelling burnt? |

get the car on a ramp and pull on the drive shafts up & down side to side they should not move also check the boots for splits. but i am pretty sure drive shafts will make more noise when you accelerate.
