Sudden loss of power s60 D5 '02 170k

Hi folks!
My s60 have developed a problem when it completely loses power, it happens under acceleration or going up the hill. It lasts for about 10 seconds and then everything just goes back to normal. It happened twice 3 weeks ago then I decided to change fuel filter and the car was fine for 2 weeks until today-it lost power going up the hill then I took my foot off the accelerator for couple of seconds and it went back to normal.

So overall it did this thing 3 times over 3 weeks and about 1000 miles I covered, apart from that it was great as always. Car starts on touch, even if it's really cold, it doesn't smoke, make noises or whistles also no messages or warning lights.
Any ideas?

I had a dodgy reluctor ring that gave a dubious speed signal. As a result, I got what I initially thought was a horrid misfire but actually turned out to be traction control going nuts.

Check the large rubber hose that connects to the turbo. These have been known to go very soft and under the circumstances that you describe collapse inwards effectively preventing passage of air and as a result a big loss of power.When you ease off, it reforms it's shape because it is not split and all is well until you again ask the engine to work hard.

Thanks! I thought about too and I'll have a look later on, is it hard to replace or just basically couple of hose clamps holding it on? Cheers!

Just a couple of clamps but the new pipe will be very stiff and it is best to try to make it pliable by soaking in hot water or using a hair dryer before attempting to fit it. There is also a push in breather pipe that goes through a spigot on the new pipe and this can also be tight.

Read the link that I included ( pity photos have gone ) and it will fill in the gaps for you IF you think that this pipe may be overly soft.

Well I had a look now and the pipe feels like an old sock... lol
Do you think you could have a look on ebay or elsewhere if you have free 5 minutes? I can't seem to find it!

Also I was thinking of kind of a cheat fix which is to put couple of wide hose clamps over the pipe which in theory should stop it from collapsing. Do you think this would work?

Edit: I just found it, last one believe it or not! £30 for a bit of rubber tho, gotta love volvo

And see the sensor? Does it just slide onto it?

£30 bargain, I seem to think mine was nearer £50 a couple of years ago! The sensor is a heater and yes it does slide in. Changed mine at a similar time of year and found the rubber too stiff for it to go in, so warmed it with some boiling water in a cup to make it more pliable. Let it dry on the inside again so the turbo doesn't ingest the excess water.

If its the diesel it cud be the fuel filter needs swapping out, this hahppened to mine one time accellerating up a hill on a cold day. Fuel filter sorted.
