There’s an article here on gauge compatibility between models. I don’t think it covers 960 to 740 but it does explain how there can be differences between model years and the kind of nightmare you’ll be entering if you try such a transplant.

My advice from personal experience is to check things in the following order

1) dry solder joints on the dash pcb
2) the actual gauge
3) the sender unit in the tank

Fortunately, I fixed my 1994 940 before I got to 3. By all accounts it’s a pain getting the in-tank unit in and out.

I passed by lakes yesterday and was told that there were 2 different 740 vdo panels (!) but unfortunately had forgotten which your car was 1989. Will ask re availability on 28.2 or you could ask barry (lakesautos to get the phone no emails are not a priority for them).
