gearbox woes..
2005 5 speed auto S60 d5.So I pulled away from the lights today and there was a loud "clunk" and "transmission service required" light is on and only third gear. I can't even select any of the gears manually with the geartronic mode. ATF was changed about 6 months ago and level checked a week ago.
So I seem to have a major transmission fault and presume I'll need to get the codes read (anyone near Lancaster?). Any ideas what this might be and what best to do? I'm handy with spanners but this could be too big a job for me. Ta, Dave. |

Usually solenoids so I hear. Can be diy but very involved. Basically you have to drive it gently from now on or fix it

Whereabouts are you? I’ve got the code reading clobber, just outside Preston (longridge), but not a lot of availability this weekend.

Thanks for the offer Reggit but I've taken it to an autobox specialist . It was originally an electrical fault - a solenoid wire had actually broken within the valve body. This was repaired but it seems that this caused further damage and the box is having to come out. Really dreading the cost of this one but I've got too much invested in the car as it stands so I'm going to have to stump up the cash and keep it for the next 25 years!

It turned out that a crimped spade connector inside the valve body had failed, causing the box to try to be in more than one gear at a time, which obviously crunched the actual gears themselves. Box now rebuilt and is better than ever.
A 10p crimp has just cost me £2k.....Bugger. Just need to figure out the adaptations issue now. Should I bother? |
