ACEA B3/B4 have no more of any additive specific to a turbocharger than do ACEA A1/B1.
ACEA B3/B4 is often recommended for extended service periods ie some Audis etc.

Was much simpler in the old days when one just lobbed the cheapest oil one could find in the engine.

Oil spec is always very popular on forum, I was asking because I never own Volvo if it was Vag group car there is planty info on them but Volvo is very limited, I did read at my car manual and 0w30 was recomended on turbo engine and because my is not turbo I went for 5w30 didn't need the extra bit which saved me about £20 and still protects the engine well

Oil specs are popular on any motoring forum.. Volvo do not recommend 0w-30 for a V70, nor do they not recommend it. Though as you say 5w-30 is fine and considerably cheaper than 0w-30.

Would using 0w30 on a service and mixing 5w30 to top up be detrimental to the engine?

bogart,

The manual on my V70 lists SAE 5W/30 for service up to 30 C. For service up to 40 C it lists 5W/40 and 10W/30. Because of our hot summer climate in Texas I have usually used 10W/30. But I'm guessing that these recommendations are meant to take into account the limitations of standard (non-synthetic) oil which I gather may thin toward the lower viscosity number toward the end of the use period. I have always used full synthetic Mobil1 oil from the first change on (at 7500 mi).

But I don't think full synthetic thins as it ages like standard oil. So wouldn't full synthetic 5W/30 be adequate at the hottest ambient temperatures? And 5W/30 oil should result in less engine wear during warmup than 10W/30.

However, in the engine oil section Volvo recommends synthetic SAE 10W-30 complying with oil quality requirements for sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances, and for prolonged driving in mountainous areas.

Not sure why your handbook lists 10w-30 for 40degC, mine doesn't, as the 30 means at 30degC.It all depends on exactly what temperatures you intend driving in and if towing or not.
Use 0w-30 in winter if you live in the Arctic otherwise 5w-30 will be fine.

See page 152 of this owner's manual for 2005 V70: http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/..._08b.htm#pg152.

Exactly what does your manual recommend for oil for the V70?

The manual for my wife's 2007 XC90 3.2L inline-6 cyl naturally aspirated recommends 0W-40 as one of the choices. I can only think that these 0W oils are a newer product, are appropriate for many of these engines, and that Volvo is now including them in their recommendations.

Recommendations in the UK are different, there is a decal on the later cars that will say use 0W-30 A5 grade.

http://www.volvocars.com/uk/sales-se.../v70-my05.aspx

But I think the difference is only due to the extended service intervals compared with the US.

The oil change milage for my 05 2.5T V70 is 18,0000 miles.

I don't trust this and use 5W-30 full synthetic and change a a max of 10,000 miles.

Being of the old school I am wary of such long intervals between changes, though is more and more common. Neither of the cars in this household do more than 5000 a year and even they get at least 2 oil/filter changes a year. Some may consider this a bit over the top.

Default NOT too frequently at all

Hello, Your short hopping is a stand alone definition of heavy duty service. The petrol contamination and the infrequent full warm ups kill oil. The only way to know what's going on with oil is to have it analysed. From the posts I've read very few people spend the money. Dear Mum's car is turbocharged and doesn't see 5,000 miles a year either. I change the stinky black stuff twice a year too. Completely unscientific. Kira
