To put into context my old T5s used to get 29-33 mpg depending on usage.
My current 3.0 4 wheel drive auto diesel does around 40mpg and up to 45 on a run. Having said all that, if you are just driving 1.5 miles (around 5 minutes?) Then you will be doing pretty well to get 30mpg and will probably soon be clogging up your dpf. A remap shouldn't affect the thermal efficiency of your car so all things being equal it should use a similar amount of fuel as an unmapped car. Obviously as has been said if you pin it then your car will go faster but drink harder at the same time.

In the summer, my D5 185 (manual gearbox) can achieve an indicated 62 mpg on an 80 mile run M1, M25, no more than 78mph, no less than about 60mph (speedcams and traffic). Genuine mpg is approx 55 mpg.
As a comparison, similar mileage on reasonably free-flowing A roads achieves an indicated 50ish mpg D5 185 has to be up to correct operating temperature to get good mpg (10 miles or so), winter diesel will knock off about 5 mpg, cold ambient temperatures will probably knock another 5 mpg off, my guess is that an autobox will knock off at least another 5 mpg. |

interesting point Leyburn,
I've noticed my v70 d5 is down on fuel consumption recently - are they less economical in the winter? Even noticed it on the way back from Xmas on the motorway - car still had some fuel left over after 220 miles on a £30 fill, but indicated mpg was around 44mpg on the computer. |
