Default Euro 3 D5 hot-start issue

Hi all,

A friend is having a problem I've not seen before on a D5. Her car has now, on a couple of occasions, started (when warm), but stalled as soon as any significant load is demanded (i.e. when pulling away for the first time). It then won't restart unless left for a significant amount of time, or cranked extensively.

It smells like a fuel pressure issue to me. The breakdown mechanic who looked at it the first time read the codes (fuel pressure...), and suggested the rail sensor or regulator/solenoid. I have a spare (used) regulator / solenoid we can try.

Anyone seen this before?

cheers

James

Hi James,

May be worth comparing notes with this chap?

His is a E4 engine though, but may be the same issue?

Thanks!

Crank sensor is an interesting thought. They will generally spring into life if cooled down (water...!) if it’s that...so that’s something to rest.

cheers

James

Hi James good to see you are still about,
when was the fuel filter last changed ?
could be the fuel pump,
have you still got vida ?
if not can you plug in a obd2 dongle and use torque app, to look at what the fuel pressure is doing,

.... and while there look at the cranking speed. Iffy starter motors generally start showing symptoms more when hot than cold.

Hi Both,

Thanks for your replies! Cranking speed sounds good, but I’ll check. My old E3 D5 cranked slowly (tired battery), but always started.

Yes, I have VIDA. Fuel pressure code stored. I’m currently struggling to do anything live without ‘shore power’, though, as the battery in that laptop is goosed. And of course it behaves perfectly when I’m there! 😂

cheers

James
