I've had my VEA 181 for a year now and bought it as a Selekt vehicle with 42k on, it's now 5 years old with 59k.

It had the EGR etc replaced before I purchased it. The only issue has been a fuel filter that wasn't replaced when it should have been. As it's a long term keeper I'm doing 9k oil changes, and thanjkfully uses next to no oil.

Mine had also had the EGR cooler replaced sometime prior to my ownership, however it needed replacing again two weeks ago (along with the EGR valve). According to the e-dipstick, mine uses no oil.

I got a 'reduced engine power' message plus the tortoise.

Mine was not the typical EGR cooler blockage issue, my primary problem was the EGR valve became stuck open which led to an almost complete loss of power (but the dealer found that the cooler was again becoming blocked while replacing the valve). Worrying as my car had already been fitted with the modified/uprated/less condensing version of the EGR cooler a short while ago... the fact that Volvo will still replace this for free - even when the car is over 4 years old - is slightly reassuring, although does point to a design flaw that may never be actually fixed? And what happens to the sale price of our cars when Volvo stop offering free replacements?

Mine was not a Selekt used car, it was an ex-leasehire that I bought from an auction. But apparently it makes no difference.

I described it in some detail a couple of pages back in this thread, including details of Volvo goodwill.

Do you change your oil and filter yourself ? and if so how easy is it ?

I'm a bit reluctant due to the fact that there is no dipstick and I don't know anything about the electronic system.

I didn't, although I do on my Mini.

I use a really good Specialist near me for the XC60.

It sounds like this dealer just can't be bothered, I'd complain to Volvo UK if I were you. And kick up a stink on social media, VUK will love that.

Selekt appears to be worthless.
SELEKT is the best in the business , it is the people on the front counter !

Clan, you know your stuff, these EGR issues, is it just the 181 BHP engines that are afected or if the revised 190 also problematic?

All the 2.0 4 cyl VEA including D2 … the newer it is the less the problem . most later than 2017 are ok .. some of the older ones have had no problem ...
