That's what mine's like. It doesn't worry me though because it goes well enough and I presume it meets soot emission legislation even though it leaves more deposits than my other two current cars.

I don't dislike the engine at all. Don't find it unrefined in the cabin and have more of an issue with road noise than any slight engine noise at high revs. Find economy perfectly acceptable for such a big car and about 10mpg better than my old BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Range Rover [BMW engine as in X5]. No doubt they have improved economy since I had mine. The most refined engine was the Q7 but there wasn't much in it really and the Volvo performs just as well. The BMW engines were least refined and the X5 was slightly quieter in the cabin. Where the Volvo engine does really sound noisy is when listening on the outside while the car drives accelerates away. It really does sound like a farm tractor to a bystander sometimes when facing the tailpipes. That's what is called 'drive-by noise'. I have Scania trucks starting from my yard at about 5.30 every morning and the newer ones are quieter, have less drive-by noise than the XC90. Really! But I have zero issue inside the cabin of the car.

Was the Q7 a 6-cylinder model?

Default Power Pulse Pipe Burst Again

After the last power pulse hose failure, the service technician showed me where the failures occur and told me to do a weekly check - hardly a glowing endorsement of build quality on a £55,000 vehicle.

So far so good, Volvo just need to sort out the DPF, gearbox judder and pollen filter.

The gearbox has been resolved by sw update. What’s up with the pollen filter though?

A photo is worth a thousand words, and would be a great help.

Power pulse pipe has been redesigned and "shouldn't give any further problems"

I had mine replaced 3 times. The first time, as it blew off it dragged out the battery connector.

The latest one has been on a couple of months now.

The car has been serviced since this incident, but nothing was mentioned to me about replacing a hose. Does anyone know exactly what/where to look under the bonnet to see if anything's visible?

Mine looked like this
