Default Are all M90 gearboxes the same?

Hello,

I need to replace the M90 gearbox on my Mk1 1994 940 2.4TIC diesel. (Jumps out of 3rd gear; 350,000 miles). I'm in France where 940s are few and far between.

I have been offered an M90 gearbox from a 1996 Mk2 940 with B230FT petrol engine. It's in Britain, so I'd like to be certain it will suit my car before paying to get it here.

Is there any reason to believe that the gearbox I have been offered will not be 100% compatible with my 940 2.4TIC diesel? I have been assuming that all M90 gearboxes are interchangeable but maybe that's just an assumption.

Many thanks for any advice.

Martin

There is some variation in gear ratios and a change to 3rd gear on later boxes.

There are 3 types of bellhousings
1) redblock type
2) green block (D24)
3) whiteblock 960

to change the bellhousing involves fully opening the gearbox to swap bellhousings

Also the redblock type uses a 3 bolt output flange with a rubber hardy disk
The D24 and 960 types use a 4 bolt flange with a normal UJ so you would also need to swap that

Many thanks for that valuable info. I guess that, in principle, I could swap the parts from the defective gearbox. But obviously it would be a lot better to find one from a d24 that would drop straight in.

Thanks again. You have really helped me.
