Holdcrofts did mine as part of a service, I had a chat with them and they agreed to include it in the software update that was part of the service schedule. I guess it's just pressing another button!

hi,

this is interesting.

so just to clarify, based on what you guys that are much more competent with spanners than me are doing, if I wanted a non-volvo tow bar I could get my trusted tow bar fitter to fit one, order the volvo electrics from FRF and get them fitted at the same time, and then get my dealer to press the magic button ?(hopefully at a service, since it's on their service plan)

Did anyone have any issues from the dealer about coding the electrics even though it was a non volvo towbar?

Many thanks

Following on from this, is this all I need in terms of wiring.... but from FRF?

https://www.volvopartshop.com/13-pin...08-16486-p.asp

And then I just buy the physical tow bar from whoever I prefer? Probably westfalia

What's strange is that vehicle specific 13pin wiring kit from someone like PF Jones, is more expensive. circa £160 compared to £90!

As long as you pay them for the software upgrade no reasonable Volvo dealer will give a monkeys about the towbar you've fitted.

But at Volvo, they have the software for their own TRM. If you buy something from a third party, you have to rely on them for software.
As far as I've understood, non-Volvo trailer modules already contain the messages required to work when you install them. They'll be an independent kludge on the side of the intergrated system, just talking to it. But Volvo's become an integrated part of the car's computer system, so that it can also be included in the regular service software updates, should need be.

Tow bars and trailer modules are different things. Read my post.

I know that. But everybody doesn't.
