I recently got a MY2014.5 XC60 (14 plate) and specifically asked the dealer to update Sensus to the latest version, which they promised to do.

This wasn't done correctly (even though they insisted they would do it). I only had a few apps showing and also only Bluetooth, no Wi-Fi. I went back to them and they did an upgrade and I specifically mentioned the Wi-Fi requirement. They did some digging and did an update but that didn't provide the Wi-Fi but since I'd specifically insisted they checked for the Wi-Fi option they then investigated and applied a 2nd update so now I have Wi-Fi so I'm a happy bunny.

Seems that it's not at all obvious to some dealers that the MY2014.5 cars can take this upgrade.

Silly question probably, but why would you want your car to connect to your home wifi?

Why sit outside your house to use the web, when you could just sit in the lounge with a laptop/iPad, etc?

I pick my XC60 up tomorrow and it has this Internet option in it (according to the salesman), but other than tethering to my mobile when I'm out and about, I probably won't ever use it, and even the tethering is likely to be used a negligible amount.

Am I missing something?

James

I was a little sceptical at 1st with this feature on my latest MY16 but soon changed:
1. The signal is stronger than on my iPhone 6 as the car's internet connection uses the car's built in roof aerial.
2. Allows my passengers to use the car's built in wifi connection with its stronger signal.

St James, I find it useful to log into a wi fi system in a hotel car park or free wi fi location if I do not have computer or phone with me.
But you are correct about logging in when outside your house

No you wouldn't need to connect to home the browser is very tedious to use but out in the field with nothing to hand could be very useful .
Yes you are missing something , The car can connect to the dealer to book services etc it will send any fault codes and messages with your request for a more efficient visit as they will have some idea of what to do and what parts they may need well before you arrive . Also from next year the car will auto connect as it drives into the dealer and the details will be on the technicians computer so he will be well prepared before he even sees the car . a very useful feature to have . Back in 1999 they were talking about this when they introduced ON-CALL , now it has arrived for real .

Default wifi

I would think that if you can connect to wifi you could also use a personal mifi dongle (personal router Huwaei 5773 etc) which could also allow your passengers etc to connect whilst on the move . I have 1 and use a 3 mobile data card which gives me 10gigs a month for £15.This is on a monthly rolling contract and I use it in my Caravan when I am away.

Will the auto-connect next year also apply to existing cars with the VOC and a data connection ?

Would be useful if it worked - which it doesn't.

It never has worked and the whole internet connection thing is a triumph of marketing over substance and usability.

It's coming early in 2016 , when all the new cars will have wi-fi and the dealers are set up to use it.
