Default wheel bearings

2005 s40 2.0d got a whirring noise when I get to 20/30 mph been to local garage and they checked front bearings and they said there is no play in either of the bearings but that it could be that one or both has just started to go. Asked them for a price and they said you cant change just the bearing you have to do full hub and was quoted £200 don't know if that's for both sides or just one? I had two new tyres put on and wheels swopped round so I know its not the tyre, most of steering parts have been done i.e track rod ends and drop links and there is no play in anything. Has anyone had same issue and is it right about not being able t o buy just the bearing? thanks in advance.

Front bearings can be pressed out and replaced but requires tons of force and a press. The rears are a hub assembly replacement if I recall correctly.

He is right about the bearing being part of the front hub.

You have to press the new hub(with bearing) into the steering knuckle.

Decent new front hub/bearing is about £60 from a manufacturer like SKF.

Just had both my front ones done, the new bearing comes as part of the hub with the wheel studs on, the whole thing gets mounted on the bottom of the suspension strut (getting the old one off is a pain).

The labour cost was £110.00 plus parts which I think were about 70.00 per bearing as they also include the ABS induction ring.

Not all noisy bearings have play in them, and not all play shows up when the car is jacked up with the wheel unloaded.

If you get to 50 mph on a quiet, smooth country road, swerve left and right alternately, if the noise subsides on right hand lock then it's the O/S bearing, and vice versa...

My wheel bearing could be heard humming at approx 80mph, but below this is wasn't that noticable.

just had mine done - two fronts on a T5. The noise was so bad that it drowned out the engine above 80mph, and made the front wheels feel like they were made out of squared-off washing machine drums. I was finicky about the source of the replacements and in the end agreed with the mechanics that they would use real Volvo parts, which sent me back £140 per side. The difference is phenomenal!
