After a few weeks of using the parking brake her leg muscles will strengthen and it will be OK

That will be a more effective change than any grease on any moving parts...

And in the meantime leave the car in gear with wheels turned towards the curb as extra security...

To stop/reduce the "bang" - put pressure on the pedal, then pull the release and ease the pedal up while holding the release.

She'll soon get used to it.

Cheers

Might struggle to do that on a hill start with a manual gearbox...

How many clicks until the parking brake is fully on?

Now, in September 2018, it takes 7 to 8 clicks to hold on a steep gradient facing forwards, which means the pads have bedded in and the cable needs a bit of adjusting.
I'll be requesting the cable be adjusted at my next annual service in December
Interesting that you get it to so many clicks. Maybe I've over adjusted mine. I tried to set it up for 3 clicks, how I usually have a traditional handbrake.
It really is quite hard to push. At 5 clicks it will hold the car on a cliff! (Without any engine assistance).
Maybe I'll slacken it off a little and see if it's easier to use.
