What frustrates me is that it would (and still could) be so easy for Volvo to release a DIM update to add a temperature gauge, maybe directly above the fuel gauge.
Whilst the system will alert you to overheating via a DIM message - what it will not do is tell you the behavior of the system including warm-up and cool running making it much harder for experienced drivers to spot and diagnose thermostat and cylinder head gasket issues. Sure that's probably not an issue for Mrs Smith taking her kids to school in a new car but for those of us running cars to 200k and beyond or using the car for long journeys in hot climates.... it's an unforgivable omission. My XC60 which had the active TFT display had a temp gauge...

Apparently virtually nobody looks at the TEMP gauge if there is one , it is utterly faultless for 99% of the people 99% of the time , as you say you get a warning, that is more effective for everyone … Yes if you get the TFT display ( it is available as an accessory ) you would get the TEMP gauge on one of the three displays if I remember ..

I'm interested in seeing your retro fit, I too would like one for when I get my v70 back in one piece.
It's saved my old s60 a few times when towing weight I probably shouldn't be towing. It's certainly assuring when there is one there!

The last car I've had the thermostat replaced on is the 2004 V70 2.5T my daughter now drives.
But don't confuse the instrument itself with what it shows. The signal to the instrument is filtered through the software. That's why the needle doesn't move, in spite of you going uphill then downhill. Connect to the car's diagnostic port and you can see the actual temperature. |

Out of place would be a 2 inch gauge shoved in a hole drilled in the dash someplace, or a phone sitting in some cheap Chinese made plastic cradle like you have.
