Default Different air filters for different 940 models?

I went to change my air filter for the first time yesterday but the Mann air filter I ordered was too small. I ended up putting the current air filter that is in my car back in, but I've noticed that the smaller air filter that I bought is listed as the compatible part to buy on a lot of websites.

Has anyone come across this problem before? My car is the 2.3 LPT. I've found a bigger air filter on eBay that is probably the one I need - I'm measuring the one in my car beforehand though so I don't get stuck with more air filters!

Was there a part number on the old filter? Usually with something like a Fram filter it will be along the lines of PH1234 - if you can find a prat number on it that will make life easier for cross referencing.

I know they changed filters at some point, when and why i don't know but when you find out which one you have, make a note of it as there will no doubt be other things on the car that are a choice of 2 or more variants as it sounds like you have a changeover model. They can be a real pain unless you make notes as you go.

The 97 Turbo is much bigger than the 95 Turbo, and I guess the NA cars are smaller again. Or maybe its related to the AC. The 97 car is AC.

Thanks for those answers!

I measured it and it had the following dimensions:

Length1: 336mm
Width1: 241mm
Height: 57mm

It was a FRAM filter with part number CA4540. My car was registered in late 1995 so I guess it would make sense if it was a crossover car.

I've found a Mann filter with these dimensions on eBay. I can't find a OEM version which matches those dimensions. Are there any benefits of the OEM filter?

Also, I notice that I have 'silencing foam' attached to the bottom of the air filter box. The Volvo owners club preventative maintenance guide suggests to remove this to prevent it from clogging up the MAF. Would you agree that this was a sensible thing to do?

Here you go :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TO-CLEAR-...8/222623653725

Not only is it only £4.99 but it's on BOGOF and free postage! That means you get 2 for £4.99 delivered free!

As for that silencing foam, if it's not between the actual filter element and the MAF, there's no way it can clog the MAF - i can't see you air filter box so no way for me to know definitively but going by mine, with the outlet to the MAF at the top and then the filter with a piece of silencing foam built into it on the unfiltered side, i'd say it would have to get through the filter first.

Unless the filter is compromised with a large hole, that isn't going to happen!

Is that the right filter for a 1997 b230fk?

I don't know, i went off the part number the OP gave, typed it into fleabay and that was the first result.

If you have a look at the filter in your air filter housing there should be a part number on it, check that against the part numbers in the listing.

A truly good point Dave. Making a note of part numbes is always good advice. Sometimes I remember to do it .... sometimes I don't.

So far as I know my jam jar is not a changeover. But. Whenever I encounter a parts query then I do start making notes of part numbers. This can be a life saver. I also find a note of the comparative Volvo and e.g. Bosch part numbers is often useful.

Cheers mate, I was hoping I could be lazy.

I noticed a few days ago my air box is missing all of the securing clips so it's a very easy job for me to check

I've ordered those air filters off eBay. I was agonising over the difference between them and a Mann filter but decided that I'd give the cheaper ones a try. Thanks for the help!
