Have you had the codes read. Many times simple things like the SIPS airbag triggers the SRS light and all you need is a simple reset. The only time you would need an SRS module, is if you can't reset the SRS codes and you get the dreaded SRS-0001 error. Please note that another reason of why an SRS light may not reset, is if you have a permanent fault with one of the SRS components

With regards to not being able to send PMs, you can make a post here: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...=99800&page=49 asking the admins to lift the limit of the minimum 30 posts to send PMs.

If you still need to contact me. you can do so on FB https://www.facebook.com/alex.gatos.3914 If you don't have FB, let me know here and I will PM you my email

Hello Gatos

thanks for your reply, I've followed the thread through to hopefully enable to send a PM.

Regarding the code reading, I've not had this done this time. When I had the codes checked in 2018 it cost me £60 and the problem was then fixed by fitting a replacement control unit which cost me £45. In April 2019 the dashboard warning light came on again, I purchased another second hand control unit for £25, fitted it and the light went off, albeit only to come back on again a few weeks after the car had passed its MOT in May.

I might be wrong, but I am thinking that reconnecting or replacing the control unit will get rid of the dashboard warning light hence resolving the problem.

Once an SRS code comes up, it registers on the SRS module and will not go away fro it, unless reset properly. Even if you disconnect it and remove it for a few months, the codes will still be there.

There is no need replacing the SRS module, every time the SRS light goes on, unless if the actual module becomes faulty. From experience, most times the SRS light comes on, it is due to the SIPS airbag connector under the driver's or passenger's seats. A simple reset fixes the problem.

If you are good with computers, and planning to keep the car for a few years, it may be worth investing on a Volvo DiCE diagnostic tool, with the VIDA software. It costs about £60 on ebay and can rear/erase codes. Bought quite a few years back and have reset my own SRS light on at least 5-6 occasions. So after just one use, it more or less paid itself off

No.
The pretentioners fire once and then they are dead
If the seatbelt pretensioners fired, they did their job and saved your bacon.
They must be replaced with pretensioners that have not been fired (ie: new)

Thanks for the information Gatos. I am not great with computers, to be honest. I am currently planning on keeping the car for another 12-18 months so it will need to go through a couple more MOTs. I guess from the sounds of things I am best taking the car to the nearby Volvo specialist and getting the codes read in order to determine exactly what I need to do.

Under the centre console. Handy enough to get out if you take your time.

You need the S40/V50/C30 forum as this one deals with the classic S40/V40. Completely different cars.

This is a guide for people who get the dreaded SRS-0001 "Control module internal fault" Error Code. This error code comes up when the SRS Control module is faulty. It will trigger the SRS light and you won't be able to erase any other SRS error codes. A new unit from Volvo is around £300. The good news is that you can get a second hand one for around £25-£40. Quite a few people with this problem were told that the replacement module must be programmed by a dealer. I have tested and swapped a few of these and can confirm with 100% certainty that NO PROGRAMMING is needed. It is a straight plug and play. Just make sure you check the part number of your SRS module and get the same one.

For this job, you will need:
  • A Philips screwdriver
  • A small flat blade screwdriver or a penknife blade
  • Ratchet with extension and 10mm socket
Before you get started, you need to:

  • Make a note of the anti-theft radio code
  • Switch off the ignition
  • Disconnect the battery negative lead
  • Wait at least five minutes before starting any work

The SRS control module is located under the centre console, which will need to be removed. Lift the gear lever leather gaiter from the rear

Remove the rubber mat

Push these two clips towards the middle and lift up the gear lever suround trim

Unplug the 12V lighter connector.

Open the lid of the centre console and remove the rubber mat

Using a flat blade screwdriver or a penknife blade, unclip this plastic cover

Undo the two screws

Undo these two screws too at the front of the centre console

Raise the centre console from the rear and wiggle it out. You may have to raise or lower the handbrake lever to make it easier for the centre console to slide out

Now the centre console is out of the way, you can see the SRS module secured by 3 10mm bolts. Undo them

DO NOT try to pull the SRS Module pink connector. You just need to push in that small pink lug and slide the orange bracket over it. It will unlock and lift the connector up.

To plug in the large pink connector back to the SRS module, make sure the orange bracket is in the open position. Place (DO NOT PUSH) the pink connector on the SRS module and simply slide the orange bracket over until it locks. The pink connector will go in while you are rotating/sliding the orange bracket

To fit everything back together, just follow this guide in the reverse order.
Yupo done mine 2 hours to remove and 2 hours to replace after sending it to ELECTRICAL SERVICES,GILLINGHAM>ME75LN...wiped it clean and returned it next day for £35 !!! excellent service !¬!!!!volvo canterbury wanted £800 for a new module
