Steering wheel
Ah: thanks for the steering wheel tip. I looked at several sources of info and some said remove the steering wheel and stalks whilst others referred to allowing the column to drop. I thought I might be able to get away with just removing the shroud and the stalks and pushing the wheel down to its lowest position, but that didn't provide enough clearance. I hadn't thought of letting the whole column drop by removing the fixing bolts (even though I had read that somewhere!).
Anyway, I'm back to square one. My problem is lack of air flow to the windscreen vents. I had convinced myself that the outlet duct had detached (as others have reported) but having got the dash off I could see that's all fine so it's not the problem. Whilst I had the dash off I replaced some very dodgy (half missing, half slipped) foam sealing strips on the air diverter box, so I hoped that might do the trick, but I'm still not getting as much air as there should be when on windscreen defrost/demist. I'm now wondering if there is a problem with the air routing in the diverter box. There's a wonderful combination of levers and pivots visible on the driver's side of the air diverter box that are operated by a servo motor (presumably controlled by the ECC system). Before I go posting elsewhere, has anyone any tips on how to check that this is all moving as it should be?
