Well, I finally got around to doing this, and it all worked surprisingly well.
I didn't use a press, just the shaped scaffolding tube connector (a brilliant idea, thank you) and the wishbone roped down tight onto an anvil, and then drifted the bush in using a large socket after keeping the bush in the freezer overnight and heating the arm with a hot air gun.

A major concern I had about hammering rather than pressing was that the bush could get wedged stuck at an angle if I didn't get it completely straight. However Powerflex have completely solved that problem by having a slightly reduced diameter (just a fraction of a millimetre) for the end that goes in first. This means the bush just drops in loose for about half its length, and so is perfectly aligned before any hammering starts.

Thank you again for all the help.

I have to say I bought a suspension kit off ebay for a little more than £100 that had both wishbones, ball joints and drop links in because all of those items were quite well worn on mine. I was a bit dubious about the quality when I ordered them as the price of just one wishbone from volvo was more then the entire kit. However 18 months later I can't complain at all. the car rides well, no rubbing of the tyres in the wheel arch and no knocking.

Morning all,

Just a note on this regarding availability of lower control arms.

I have just had both sides changed at the dealer Monday just gone ( aluminium type) so the parts are available.

2 control arms, 2 front tyres and a 4 wheel alignment. They were advisories a couple of months back at my MOT so just had it done.

I'm trying a set of Meyle HD wishbones. The original Volvo pressed steel ones were replaced with genuine Volvo aluminium ones a few years ago, the didn't last any better. Let's see what the Meyle HD can do.
I priced OEM from Volvo, the parts were available but the price was 'a little' higher!
