Default Battery charging warning light

Hi all
We are up in Yorkshire on holiday in our 2014 xc60 d4 auto 181.
Just been out & on the way back a warning message appeared saying 'battery charging failure, service urgent.
Just changed the battery a couple if weeks ago.what does this jess?
Am I OK to drive the car & will I need to keep charging the battery?
Thanks.

Ok, just had a quick.look under the bonnet & the alternator drive belt has snapped.. 78k mikes, not sure if that is about normal?
Anyway, does this belt drive anything else? Is it an easy job? We are on holiday so I can't debit myself.. can a local garage do it for me, and any special tools required?
And am I ok to drive the car?. it drove back ok after the belt had snapped.
Thx.

The battery will be draining while you’re driving so don’t expect to get far (maybe 30 mins?). Make sure you have the belt debris clear before starting at all as it can get tangled in the cam belt and wreck the engine.

Any garage should be able to replace it for you. I’d get them to replace the tensioner and check the pulleys too.

Your the second chap in as many weeks whose aux belt popped on holiday….

As said you might get 20-30 mins running out of a full battery. I would get it to a dealer, they will have the exact part and should be able to fit it quickly…

Yorkshire is a very big place - whereabouts are you?

To replace the belt you remove the wheel, wheel arch liner and I think it’s a t30 torx socket to pull back the tensioner. It works the a/c as well. 20 min job if you’ve done it before (assuming it’s the 5 cylinder engine).

Hi. On a 5 cylinder, It's a T60 torx to operate the aux belt tensioner. Did mine yesterday and you are correct about the procedure. Could not do it from above or below. Just by the wheel arch liner being semi removed. The a/c belt is separate and behind the aux belt so no interference when changing the aux belt.

Booked it into the closest Volvo dealer on Thursday.
Quoted me £170 for both aux belts, which i didn't think was too bad.. don't want the job done with aftermarket belts.
The dealer is 42 mins away, so fingers crossed I can get there with a freshly charged battery?
Will it do any damage if the battery gets too low?
We are in the AA but didn't want to bother with the hassle of getting it trailered.

170 is good for both belts I paid 220 for just the aux belt and tensioner. They didn't do the the aircon stretch belt even though I asked them to. Are you not getting the tensioner done?

You will be pushing it - turn everything off - radio, fan, etc.
