I will have to purchase the correct tools before I start. I qualified as a motor mechanic in the very early 80's before going into the building trade and have always kept my hand in. I have also been watching a few you tube video's. The stand out for me is the pulleys on either end of the camshft are not in a fixed position using a woodruff key, which is alien to me. I noticed one tool (flat plate) which slots in the end of the camshaft when the rear pulley is removed and locks the cam in position

I ordered the belt kit on ebay, which includes both belts and both pulleys " DAYCO Timing Belt Kit Set - KTB435 - fits VW LT 40-55 I, LT28-50 1990-1996
(361506651645)" also a water pump Water Pump fits VW TRANSPORTER Mk4 2.5 91 to 03 Coolant 074121004 074121004A New

Give us a shout if you need help sourcing special tools of your own I spent many hours looking for stuff in the past and have managed to source or fabricate most of the essentials. However if you are looking to borrow, there are some great guys on here who I'm sure would be willing to lend you the tools including myself if you want my crude-ish homemade tools . Also get onto D24T.com as well, that is a great resource for these engines. Hope you get the old girl sorted.

Thanks for the offer and the heads up with D24T.com, will definitely check it out

This afternoon finished the rear window trims and the drivers seat lumbar support issue, both were an easy fix

The metal clip that connects the lumbar strap to the adjuster had snapped. Two extra wide cable ties did the job of re-connecting the strap a treat and used regular cable ties to pull the seat cover together in place of the metal rings. Made the ties already so cost nothing and what a difference the lumbar support makes. Also took off all the old horse club stickers from the rear windows ;-)

This crankshaft pulley tool is for extending the leverage required to tighten the fixing bolt on the pulley. Fitting a torque wrench to the end and torqueing to 250ft lbs ........or known in the trade as FT ....F****** Tight

There is a further tool that locks inside the pulley and secured on the block to stop the crank from turning

I guess both can be manufactured or its a case of using a large breaker bar and scaffold pole cut to length

https://vw.snapon.com/SpecialToolsDe...itemid=4710184

To undo stubborn crankshaft bolts in the past I have jammed a spanner or breaker bar and socket on the chassis or such like and give a short turn of the engine on the key. Not sure if that would work in this case

The last bit sounds like it may not go well!🤔

So still not got the cambelt kit, the one I ordered never arrived and just got a refund on ebay and have to look for another supplier

This supplier has genuine vw items but he doesn't know if they would fit the 940, I wonder if anyone here would know looking at the info on this ebay item number 284937354115 ?

Whilst waiting I changed the oil and filter with fully synthetic oil 10/40 and added another litre, after reading up on the D24T.com site. The oil filter looked fairly recent, but on opening the air filter box it was clear the thing had not been changed for years, So may just have had oil and oil filter changes. Not seen many filters this blocked before, the fuel filter looked old and certainly there was lots of crud coming out as I tipped it out into a bowl. I took it for a spin afterwards and notice a complete change of engine response. If I had checked the filter in Epsom bought it, before or journey home to the Highlands I would have taken it out completely and run without it

Cheers

Pretty sure that's not the one.

The boxy 80s LT used a 2.4 straight 6 diesel.

The later LT, along with the T4 transporter, used a straight 5 2.4 and 2.5 diesel.

I don't believe anything much is interchangeable between the two engines

Hi. In my experience it is difficult to find kits still available for the later engines it would probably work out cheaper and easier to gather the parts separately. I have bought parts from autodoc.co.uk in the past, maybe allow a couple of weeks for delivery, but you can get most things individually still. In terms of the water pump brickwerks.co.uk might still have the correct one.
Hope you can sort this as there's nothing more annoying than the wrong parts and waiting on parts.

I too have found autodoc excellent for getting bits.

It's a german firm, but they were great at getting brakes for my W126 560SEL, I couldn't find the right calipers in the UK.
