Default Thinking of buying V50: what should I look for?

Hi there,

This is my first post, and I'm after some advice.

I've seen this local to me:

https://www.southerncarsales.co.uk/u...sussex-2473119

I'm not that interested in rally-style performance: just want a reliable, economical diesel to replace my 2004 Merc C220 estate. I know there are some horror stories about turbo on the 1.6D engine; if it has service history (as it seems to), should that be enough?

Anything else I should be asking / looking for?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks y'all.

Personally I avoided the D2 (1.6) engines and went for D3 (2.0). D3 and D4 are Volvo engines, very reliable.

Don't be sold on the shiny looks of that car. These are not new cars, there will be some issues. Making them look good is just to lure you into buying.

Consider any car that is sold in your area which is in a good state (this is something you can not asses from pictures alone).

Andras,

That's definitely good advice, both general and also specific to this model of car. It's only 10 mins away from me, so I'm going to give it a testdrive on Saturday.

Just wanted to know if there are any specific questions I should be asking about service history, etc.

Thanks so much for your rapid reply.

EDIT: Also noticed that particular V50 has un-heated leather seats, which is not a good resale point.

Please see my 'completely unbiased' recommended engine lookup chart:

have to agree on the "no peugot were involved" comment

and yes the 2.4i / petrol/170bhp does give you 33-34mpg round town,,

I'd also recommend that the buyer has a good look underneath, esp at the back, mine is a bit scabby, which was a surprise, given the rest of the car seems sound.
Back brake calipers seem to be problematic with some cars.

Thank you for the engine over view. And of diesel engines from what year (avoiding the 1.6 obviously) did they have DPFs and which have given grief?

Recommend you check CEM unit fully working, ie no random fault codes. Expensive to replace +£1,000.
