Good luck.
That might be why it's been neglected causing the level to drop...........

If you are going to do a drain and refill the first thing to do is make sure you can remove the filler plug that is on top of the gearbox under the air filter.

If you drain first and cannot get the fill plug our you are stuck.

Check out You tube videos.

thank you for your responses, mine is the TF-80SC Aisin Warner box. today i have dropped the subframe and removed the cover for the valve block. I have purchased a second hand valve block with less issues than mine (apparently) for the same box. although its from an xc90 from 2007 I am taking a chance that the valve body may be the same. if it isn't, I am hoping the solenoids will be. the car it came from had shift flare between 3rd and 4th. I found the tiniest trace of silver swarf in the fluid when I dropped it out of my gearbox.

if this is steel it will undoubtedly be jamming the solenoid shafts. since the box works when cold I am hoping that whatever has caused it isn't too serious yet that this temporary repair can keep the gearbox going until end of life.

this job hasn't ben too difficult yet just a bit fiddly. if you're not comfortable dropping a subframe slightly though, don't even consider this job your self.

even if you could get the bolts out you cant remove the valve body cover because the subframe gets in the way.

Unfortunately I did not get it out today as I lost light. I will be back tomorrow hopefully with more information.
