Default Ecm1600 Boost control valve out of range message - D5 185bhp

Hi all, not been on here for a while. Enjoying trouble free xc70 ownership for a while.

Anyhow 2006 xc70 D5 185bhp 210k ish, now got a message engine system service required. Been going into limp mode occasionally for about a month.

Scanned with dice and Vida and the code is ECM1600. Boost control valve out of range.

It’s had a new intercooler 2 years ago, along with a shed load of other work - ac rad/ engine mounts / steering rack etc.

Also the swirl arm is attached and does move.

Just want a list of things to check to hunt the problem... now the sun is here!

Where is the boost turbo valve located?

Hi the 185 D5 has not got a boost turbo valve, it has a electronic actuator fitted to the turbo, this could be your problem ,

Hi Dave, where is the turbo on these things? I assume hidden around the back of the engine.

What does the actuator look like on the turbo unit?

Just want to know how to identify it.

Are these prone to issues on the D5?

Yes it at the back of the engine , you will see the unit bolted to the turbo,
also the vnt turbos do carbon up and it stops it working correctly ,
look on youtube to see how vnt tubos work,

Could also be boost sensor which is mounted on the intercooler near one of the big pipes. Mine is on passenger side

Took a gander over the weekend with the car on the ramps in the sunshine.
Checked all intake pipes under the bonnet then got underneath her.
When looking up at the resonator box that goes up the back of the engine to the turbo, the box was covered in oil and had dripped into the engine mount and other surrounding areas.

Unfortunately being an AWD the transfer box was in the way and I could not see or even access the top connection.

Would it be safe to say that the oil is a sign of a loose connection, and possible source of my limp mode issues?

Pressure sensor mounted in intercooler can cause this fault code, this is more likely then the turbo regulator, they fail in very little causes.
