In Comparison, a XC60 T8 R design, will not drive as nice as a Mecan, or handle and ride quite as good, not have the prestige, but T8 quicker in a straight line, quieter, well built, and driving in electric mode is just something else, much cheaper to run. There are other Hybrids and electric just starting to filter though now, but I bought mine a year ago, there was nothing else on the market that came close to an all round package of a T8, if your Journeys are generally short up to around 60 miles, and not shed loads of motorway miles, although tbh even then it is not that bad if you manage the batteries in comparison to some other cars.

I've seen remarks here that a T8 will have better residuals than the other models, which if true, must be dialed into the equation.

However, leaving that aside, I can not see ANY driving schedule that would result in a T8 ownership costing less than a non-hybrid for a non-business buyer. The fact that the grant has also been withdrawn only makes the situation worse. And if you don't have a home charger, add that to the bill.

And will a T8 bought now really have better residuals in 3 years, given it's target market will have options of newer cars that'll likely have better battery tech, against a 2019 T8 that has a battery that's been thru many charge/discharge cycles ?

I'd absolutely love a pHEV, but as a private buyer, whose commute is literally 2 miles each way, and who does approx 6K miles a year, I can't see the financial argument for it, and I'm guessing my driving profile is almost optimum.

I'm in research phase for a new car myself. I've narrowed it down to a T5 XC60 momentum pro + , a merc glc (which I currently have), or a top kitted Tiguan allspace with the big petrol engine.
I think the Jag XE is too small, and the XF is too big/expensive for the kit I want. I'm not an audi fan.

I see upthread remarks that r-design is preferrable to momentum. My concern is that I'm used to the Merc on air-suspension. I've seen comments that the R-design can be harsh (comparatively speaking). Any one care to share their experiences/ thoughts ?

I'm majorly disappointed that the launch models for the GLC are diesel only, which just seems totally daft given the current climate. No timeline for petrol.

Yes, the residuals against a hybrid who's battery is nearing end of warranty is somewhat questionable. Reliability aside, dealers would use any excuse to drive down the value. As, as you point out, technology will only improve over the next few years.

As much as I'm salivating over the idea of 400bhp and gliding soundlessly through towns, there are considerations to be made. That being said, I've been guilty in the past of letting my heart rule my head.

before you sign up for an XC60, make sure you test drive a V90CC, just to make sure you really want the SUV form.

And yes, was looking at the new Macan just the other day...

As a private buyer, (salary paid by the chancellor) I deliberately avoid anything priced over £40k. I object to the additional tax.
Hence my V60 Momentum Pro T5, which is very desirable.
My other consideration is the quality of the dealer. I am lucky here as my local Volvo dealer (Cambridge Garage, Havant) is excellent, being a family owned business.
I haven't tried a Merc, but our local BMW and Audi dealers leave much to be desired.

Yeah, we're kind of tied into the whole SUV thing now. The higher driving position really does help to see more of the road ahead.

I'm actively avoiding Audi because they're just so common. I'm sure they're great cars, but just not for me.

I was in a similar situation. 6k per year and most journey's less than 20miles so a T8 was perfect, just not justifiable over 3 years petrol cost wise.
I went for a T5 Inscription Pro (having come from various performance cars and last "family" car was a Jeep GC SRT8). The ride in comfort mode in the T5 is perfect in London's bumpy/potholed/speed bumped roads. Not crashy, smooth and wife doesn't complain.
Dynamic mode stiffens it up a bit and is actually surprisingly good when heavy with the right foot. (bear in mind the SRT8 was setup on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and handled ridiculously well for an SUV)

Look at the T5 and compare the cost versus others. Factor in the difference against the higher running costs and you might be pleasantly.
