Default Some advise concerning cambelt.

Thought i would consult the collective wisdom of the forum before changing the belts on my xc90 2010 86,000 miles.
I have the full genuine kit- cam/aux belts and tensioners, but I wonder about changing the water pump whilst in there.
There does not appear to a problem with it, but is nearly 10 year old. To my knowledge I don't think it is a clear recommendation from Volvo, but starting to think it could be a good idea, what are your thoughts?

As has been said many many times before, the Volvo water pump has an enviable reputation for quality and longevity.

When I bought my ( now sold ) XC70 D5 it had 162k miles on it and I decided to give it new Genuine Volvo cambelt and auxiliary belt kits.

The water pump was original and was still in great shape so was left alone.

The car was sold to a local guy and now has approaching 200k and still no issues.

If you want to change the pump when doing the belts by all means do so but only fit a new Volvo pump because a new aftermarket one will probably fail well before your existing one ever does and damage the engine with it.

Forgot to mention that when I bought my XC90 D5 it had 116K on the clock and once again I immediately installed cambelt and aux belt kits as there was no documentation proving that they had been done.

The water pump was fine and remained untouched.

Thanks for the super swift reply. Correct me If I'm wrong but think I've seen your videos on the D5 cambelt - great stuff indeed.
If i do change the pump it will be genuine only- it's lucky i live near to FRF!
Thanks also for the info on the hanbrake adjustment - nice and tight again.

Hi, no the excellent Videos that you have seen on youtube ( SiRobb )have been done by cheshireD5 on here.

Really Excellent and a huge help to many who prefer to do their own work.

FRF are very good however I have always managed to get a cracking discout at my local Volvo dealers simply by asking for one.

Good luck.

That’s interesting to see. I asked my local Volvo dealer (Marshalls of Cambridge) if they would give me a discount regarding work on my XC90. After a bit of back and forth they said they’d offer me a discounted labour rate of £80 per hour (+ VAT!!!) with no discount on parts.

I went to IVS in Letchworth instead.

exactly what my scenario was apart from when the garage [a very good mates] got the old belts off they were amazed that I had just driven from Sheffield to Newcastle at 70 / 80 mph 2 days before and the water pump had not gone big style as there was a lot of play in the shaft .
he showed me the pump to prove how bad it was and I must admit it was a huge surprise that something with that much play worked , cooled the engine fine and had no noise whilst running

How lucky you are, my local Volvo dealership won't discount anything, therefore I only buy from them when I need something urgently

I would put money on it that the failed pump was not a volvo one .... Someone fitted a cheap nasty one as for some reason they had no faith in the volvo one .
There is supposed to be some play in the bearing .. it should not be "solid " with no detectable play ...

Clan beat me to it - I was also going to say that it is 99% likely the belts have been done using a pattern part kit...
