It was also used to tow a horse box for a number of years by the previous owner. Never heard of an electronic device preventing gear selection. I have had the surround off of mine a number of times and never seen anything like described. I have laos sat there selecting all the gears whilst stationary, engine has running and off. In fact I often take advantage of the torque and put it in 6 whilst doing 40 or less equally I have put it in to a low gear whilst at high speed, but slowing with no problems.
I would check that you are not losing brake fluid as the clutch shares the same reservoir as when the when the slave cylinder went in out other car the first symptoms was difficulty selecting gears.
A chap has 2007 D5 136kw - so its a different car. If there is no part in your xc90 D5 euro3, it doesnt mean a part is not fitted in later models.
If I personally would not have experience with it - I just simply wouldnt leave a comment here giving OP an advice where to start looking for problem.

That part is called Solenoid according vida
OEM 30670323

For some reason CEM was giving me fault code "no communication with transmission control module" as far as I remember. But problem was with solenoid
Thats how it looks like

That is present on mine but it is only designed to stop the car going into reverse when you are not stopped. It doesn't effect any other gears. Having check Vida there are no differences between the 163bhp manual and the 185 manual gearboxes.

HI owenfackrell.
Mine wont go into 5th or 6th when stationary (and nor would my 2007 V70), but once moving you can - not sure of exact speed but below 30.
I haven't looked at this bit yet to see.
The brake fluid is still on max.

Slave cylinder sounds a good bet. Also it would appear there isn't much wrong with most of these boxes if you can get to 172k without issues. Maybe this one is just a bit dodgy.

I would also appreciate some info on the manual gearbox. My 6th will engage and then the gearbox will disengage it as soon as I touch the trottle. There are no electronic components preventing anything on mine. I also figured out there is a whole gear selector module that comes out of the box while the box is still in place.
Please advise! Thank you!

I've also got a D5 6 speed manual, 2006, 93k miles and no probs with the gearbox. I would agree with others who mention keeping an eye on the clutch slave cylinder. That went on mine at around 50k miles. Watch the fluid level and see if it goes down at all.

I have a 2005 xc90 with manual gearbox,m66, recently I experienced problems when changing from 4th to 5th.The gear lever was travelling too far as if going to reverse.I removed the gear lever module which has an electric solenoid attached on which there is small wheel that is spring loaded,in normal driving this spring is retracted to block the gear shift travelling too far.I assumed this was not working so I replaced the whole gear shift module. It still did,nt work. After some deliberation I decided it must be electrical so I looked at fuses I thought may be faulty.everything seemed ok.I then discovered the fusebox under the steering wheel, checked the fuses and found 10 amp fuse had corroded and blown.Replaced fuse everything works fine.I had previously contacted a garage for advice and was told it was a faulty gear box.BEWARE

One of the issues here is the M66 is so reliable, very few people know much about it incl. some dealers. Also I think I’m correct in saying that Volvo don’t open up gearboxes, if you have weak synchro or a noisy bearing, it’s a new box. Great if you are under warranty…. Expensive otherwise…..
