Just a thought have you checked the gearbox mount as the small bush perished or the mount under the crank pulley as these can be sometimes overlooked. Reason I say this as mine was clunking although no noise when selecting drive etc it was noticeable when going over a slight bump or coming off a bend. Just an idea

The easiest way to test drop links is just rock the car from side to side. It's one of the plus points of having roof rails..

Any dodgy link will clonk straight away. Before I had my balljoint issues that was a problem I had briefly, it wasn't knackered it just wasn't done up tight enough

I did check the drop links. I managed to get them undone as I only changed them out less than 9 months ago and there was the usual sort of resistance that you would expect from a good joint with no signs of any play.
I did have the tracking checked/adjusted at the MOT as I had changed out both front wishbones the month previous. I would ave thought if there was anything un toward the tester would have found it. I did mention the noise and asked them to check when I booked it in.

I too am searching for the source of a rattle (more than a clunk) thought it might have been the rear box outer skin which has rusted thru, but having firmed that up with a gun gum fixup the rattle is still there, when going over certain uneven road surfaces. Dont know if the lower mount near flywheel is a likely cuprit, have replaced the small/big bush under the gearbox. but then some miles ago so maybe that could be it? sounds more like a bit of heatshield, some of these rattles are a pig to find 😎

Agreed, they can be a right PITA to find. The only thing is that it has got so loud now you would think it would be obvious.
Will have to investigate again when I get home (working away does not help, but it gives me more time to visit this site though). At least I felt a bit more comfortable when the MOT did not throw up any surprises and I specifically asked them to see if they could find anything. I will of course let you all know when I find anything.

that's fair enough and probably not the cause then but just for the record (and not intending to sound like a broken record or anything) it might help others as well to reiterate - the link doesn't have to be worn to knock, it can be perfectly good but not done up tight enough. a problem which is sometimes exacerbated by the difficulties of the counterhold (in my case an allen key)

agreed in your case one would assume the MOT man would have spotted it straight away.. but nevertheless I would still advise the rocking test if you haven't tried it already (and for future readers) it takes all of 10 seconds to try and eliminates the query immediately

That's a good test. Should you be able to hear anything at all if everything is ok? In case anyone has that issue

well you might get a bit of creaking lol some of these cars are 20years old after all

but any knocking noise should be investigated as a matter of some urgency for sure
