The tailgate lock part you are talking about is 9485477
Volvo call it a Lock Brace.
Not very expensive from Volvo if I recall. (maybe £15).
As you say, it is the plastic sheath that wears out.

Maybe see if you can rig up something using a short length of suitable hard plastic pipe (split and taped or glued etc)?

Positioning is adjustable after you loosen the two Torx screws.

What colour is the interior? After the steering column cowling.
