Is this dependant on some other factors/conditions being true, as IIRC in the Astra and Merc 325 handbooks it mentioned something about a regen light would come on if x/y/z are met and that point it advised to maintain a constant speed until the regen was complete?

I am always on the motorway daily (doing 1,000 miles a week and never saw this happen on its own) so I just did what I mentioned in my previous post. Upon doing that, the mpg went back up accordingl to the onboard computer, car felt fractionally perkier and smoother.

Apologies, but diesel is a completely inappropriate fuel for a car.
Lorries - where you need massive torque, then yes, but a car? Nah.

Sold to us by governments as the fuel of the future, 10 years later, it's the worst thing since coal. Helped along the way by the VW scandal.

You'd be better off with a T2/T3 if you only do short trips.

Cheers

All diesels with a working DPF will regenerate, usually at around 500 mile intervals (this interval will be less, as mentioned, if you do short journeys). If you switch the computer readout to instantaneous I can't remember if these cars show 99.9 mpg or 999.9mpg when no throttle is applied when slowing. If 999.9mpg then you will notice the car will only display something like 120-140mpg with no throttle.

If you can switch to l/100kms then you will see it go from 0.0l/100kms to 1.2-1.8l/100kms when regenerating. You may also notice a raised idle speed.

Perhaps people want to tow a caravan/trailer or they just like the huge amount of usable torque available at relaxing engine speeds.

That sounds pretty appropriate to me.

That's why I have a 4.0 petrol with LPG. Half price fuel, and cleaner than diesel AND petrol.

Right and your car emits unicorn farts I presume and you would happily stick your mouth over the tail pipe.....

If you're so concerned about the environment, you wouldn't burn any fossil fuel for your own convenience and pleasure so let's be realistic about your green credentials.
