Yes, good point, will check the air filter, then meths treatment, and then give the sensor a try!
I'm going to have to go on a road trip to burn a 3/4 tank of petrol as well before adding the meths Last edited by haymitch; Feb 27th, 2019 at 19:49. |

Right, I have an update.
I've looked inside the air filter box and there are no signs of anything plugging the MAF. Also, I tried the meths treatment again and sadly the intermittent problem occurred again this morning. Interestingly, a few days ago, after the car had sat for a week it started, albeit with some gentle encouragement with the accelerator whilst cranking. It started like this a few times. This morning I tried to start the car to see the results of the meths treatment. The first time I started the car I could see it was struggling so pressed the accelerator gently but this time it stalled. When I tried to restart the symptoms were back to how I originally described as few weeks ago. I was thinking of replacing the coolant temperature sensor as a next step. Does anyone else have any ideas? I was wondering whether it could be a leaky fuel injector, faulty fuel pressure regulator, or perhaps a clogged fuel filter. |

When did you add the meths and how many miles have you done in between?
Did you also check the air filter for cleanliness while you were checking for anything clogging the MAF? Giving it gentle encouragement with the loud pedal tends to point to a sticky AICV and possibly blocked breathers too.

I added the meths yesterday and I went for a 60 mile drive. Should I have left it in the tank for longer? The air filter looked clean when I inspected it, but I replaced with a new spare one I had lying around just in case

That answers what i was asking, it mixes with the fuel in there and gets recirculated via the fuel return line etc so is probably still in there getting rid of any moisture but a 60 mile drive should be enough to get rid of most of the moisture.
Good call on the air filter, eliminates those two possibles as well. I've got a couple of ideas brewing that probably haven't been checked by your garage, let me think on them and see what i can come up with.

You're welcome - it's a process of elimination but we'll get there in the end.
Is yours manual or auto?

You tried the coolant temperature sensor? My car wouldn't start in the mornings when it was colder without a few minutes of cranking whilst pressing the accelerator. Once started it spluttered and wouldn't rev past 3000rpm, when warmed up it ran pretty much like normal. A new coolant temperature sensor cured it
