The hole is where the ABS sensor pokes through, if the knuckle doesn't have the hole for the sensor there's no real need to try and block it off with that washer which i'd personally remove, there's not a great amount of clearance between the hub and those bolt heads and the washer might be enough to make the bolt head interfere. Don't forget the bearings are sealed and have a further shield in the form of the cup on the backplate, no real need for it and it could cause you more problems without actually preventing any ingress of dirt/grit.

First link is to the ones you've bought, second is for the ABS version. In fairness i can't see any evidence of an ABS sensor in your pics other than the hole in the backplate for it.

Must admit, that's a good price for them, when i needed some, there were virtually none available except for about £125 each, spotted a pair newly listed on fleabay (NOS) at £2.99 each + £10 P&P each so snapped them up then and there.
The back plates are also different for ABS and non-ABS variants - it's not simply a case of one no having the hole from memory. I know I had to renew both of mine as there was very little left of them.

Thanks for info. The pics on the tyre are the old bolts holding the shield on, I used the washer as with that ABS hole the bolt wasn't wide enough. Have checked and the old bolts are about 1mm proud of the ones I fitted, I put the worn out hub back on and the disc and there is plenty of clearance, approximately 9mm so hopefully should be fine. Will send some pics once its ali refitted, thanks again for the advice.

Thanks for any info, was pleased to get the new shields fitted, they came off with a bit of heat.

I think that Dave was basing his reply on the apparent state of the bearing in the image and not suggesting that the bearings should be replaced as a matter of course. (Apologies Dave if I’ve got that wrong.) I haven’t renewed my wheel bearings either. Just smeared a little more grease in. So far so good.

I was basing my reply on my experience with mine (bear in mind, mine had already failed, it's not nice when they do!) but reading all the blurb about that type of bearing, if the inner race drops out then they are generally too worn to be considered safe.

However, if you happen to knock the inner race out by ........... errrrrrrr ......... "accident", as long as you can get the inner race back in with a bit of a fight and it doesn't feel rough, you should get away with it..

Point taken Dave. I wasn’t aware that it was supposed to stay in place. Mine didn’t actually fall out, but it was loose, which, to be honest is what I was expecting. It would have fallen out if I had not been holding the hub in such a way to prevent it falling out. Once replaced it appeared to be serviceable and all appears well at present.

Thanks for the input. Have finally finished, these are the pictures, even got a wash as well. I got the discs from buycarspares.co.uk, they were £40.99 for 2 which seemed good. They needed to know the wheelsize and the braking system, but they were the right ones.

Just a word to the wise for the future, take your own measurements of the discs so you know what they are. I've had several online suppliers try and tell me that not only do i have 302mm diameter by 28mm thick discs but i also have a turbo! All that from the reg number!

For the record mine are 282mm x 22mm thick and i definitely don't have a turbo!
The online supplier that quoted those discs for mine was also quoting a ridiculous price for them so i suspect their online "reps" were paid commission.

Also Volvo seemed to fit what was available at the time so while most other cars of your year may have a certain make of brakes, yours may be the "odd one out". Also if your car sat in the showroom for a while before being sold, it's entirely possible that the spec was changed by the time it was registered.

That's what happened, I supplied the reg, and the other supplier sent the larger discs you mention. Mine are 262mm.
I found the contact I mentioned, they wanted the brake system type, Girling, or Bendix, and the wheel size, I also gave the disc diameter. About 3 years ago I ordered a distributor from the main dealer. I took all the info, but no the reg was all that was needed. When it arrived it was wrong, no hall sensor.
