A lot of scammers are using "number masking" techniques to give an apparently bona fide UK number but it doesn't exist and they're calling from overseas to scam you out of your hard earned millions - i had one the other day saying it was the fraud dept of my bank and did i intend to complete the transaction for £600 to someone in South Africa?

A while later, similar phone call from another number "This is the fraud department of your bank............"

Other scams are available of course but most numbers come up as "The number you have dialed has not been recognised".
