Default Change timing belt

In addition to our T5, we also have a faithful 1988 240 GL wagon that just keeps purring along.

It has 302,000 kilometres on the odometer before it gave up the ghost about 3 years ago.

I estimate the wagon has done about 50,000 kilometres since the odometer stopped so I think it's about time the timing belt was replaced.

Is replacing the timing belt a relatively straight forward job, or should I take the wagon to a mechanic?

A relatively easy job - hardest is undoing the crank pulley. Do a search and you will find plenty of previously posted info.

Get a genuine Volvo timing belt, which has the timing marks printed on it, so even if you do slip, like I did, its easy to get everything back into the right place again.
If an old bu88er like me can change the belt, then anyone who can turn a nut can.
As a final check, once the new belt is on, turn the engine over by hand (plugs out, racket on the crank nut) which will PROVE that at very least, nothing is going to come into intimate contact that shouldn't.
It took me about 90 minutes, being slow, and very careful (takes Mike about 25 minute, but I hate him!!)
