Rear O/S wheel bearing
Have diagnosed a rumbling R/O/S wheel bearing. Was easy when jacked up compared to the N/S. Booked in for a change tomorrow under warranty. Will report back. Dealer has 2 hours against it so as long as the shaft and bearing aren't welded together with corrosion it should be straighforward enough.
I'll be glad to get rid of the Chinook helicopter noise following me down the road! |

I did both rear wheel bearings on my xc90 a couple of months back and its not too difficult a job for a good spanner man.Funny but when you try the old bearings by hand you would'nt think there was anything wrong with them but under load they rumble. Its a common repair on the xc90. peter.

What year and mileage is the car please? I had that problem whilst still in warranty and the stealers couldn't find what was causing it. They changed the propshaft on the car and gave up in the end saying that some xc90s just did this. I noticed the noise at its worst at 1800- 1900rpm. In the end I changed the rear wheel bearings and the noise went but unfortunately this was at my own expense as the car had gone out of warranty by a few months.
The stealers in question- FRF Swansea, great for parts but the service dept I found very unhelpful especially Marvin the Paranoid Android 'to be honest' |

I replaced the NSR bearing last year... The shaft and securing bolt both came out no bother, but the bolts holding the bearing cartridge (hub) to the suspension were swines..!! I had to resort to using a blowlamp, followed by a liberal application of WD40 (not environmentally friendly, but very effective). About 3 or 4 episodes of this treatment will loosen almost any bolt...
The new bearing was sourced via Ebay for £79.99 (I bought two - not needed the 2nd as yet). I'm now on the hunt for a front bearing as I'm pretty sure the OSF has started to grumble and whine... Sounds like me on a bad day, actually... The most difficult part of changing the bearing was the reassembly of the suspension... There's a torque arm that has to be undone to gain access to the hub securing bolts... On reassembly, this was now about 5mm too short and I had to use a long lever to persuade them back together again. Volvo get around this by using a special tool that clamps the suspension in place, preventing this problem. My long lever was a cheaper option... Miti |

Bob,
97k miles and reg'd Mar '05. I could hear the noise the past few weeks and jacked it up one day after concluding it was most likely the O/S. A quick spin of the wheels and it was clearly the rear. I jacked the O/S/rear as a crosscheck and it was relatively noise free. |

Well, all done and the Chinook heli is gone. Took just under 2 hours and the shaft was stuck in the bearing and had to be removed too. However it pressed out OK apparently and the rest went to plan.
Happy days..... I hope the other 3 go too before the warranty is up! |
