You were right about the independent not changing it at the 108k but even more worryingly neither did the main dealer previously - having just looked at the checklist for the 54k service carried out by Holdcroft Stoke a Volvo main dealer I notice that they ticked all the 54k items apart from the tensioner change box. Which indicates that it's not just the indies that you can't rely on to carry out a service schedule fully. Which is why I do all my own routine servicing.

I'm just glad that I posted the photo of the fitted guard and that Rooster spotted that the faulty tensioner was still there - despite the fact that it should have already been changed twice when "experts" carried out the 54k and 108k services.

It's sad to think that you can't even rely on main dealers, never mind indies, to do a proper job.

Bearing in mind that I fitted the guard myself am I right in thinking that replacing the tensioner (and presumably idler pulley) is a straight forward diy job?
Yes a pretty straightforward job you will need a big torx bit for the new tensioner though . It depends when it had the 54000 mile service , it may have been before your current tensioner was deemed unreliable , The whole aux. belt/tensioner story is long and complex involving 3 different tensioners from 2007 to 2014 this is why it is crucial to keep in contact with the dealer as they have procedures to not let one slip through , but once the car goes elsewhere it is in the lap of the gods .

Thanks for the info Clan. You queried when the 54000 mile service was done - it was done in August 2012 at 53735. The same main dealer then did the following two services at 72000 and 90000 miles. So no excuse at all for not changing it at the correct time or indeed for not picking up at the subsequent services the fact that it had not been changed. Clearly if they had procedures "to not let one slip through" those procedures failed three times for my car (which at the time was owned by a leasing company).

Owners trusting their cars to expert main dealers (and paying top rates for the peace of mind) should be able to have confidence that everything required on a service schedule will have been done.

I meant what date was the 54000 mile service done? It may precede the known problems with the aux belt tensioner bulletins .,

It was done on 6 August 2012

BTW I've now got a T60 on order (biggest torx I had was a T50) and will source the tensioner tomorrow.

But it shows it as an item to be done on the 54000 service on the actual Service checklist that was completed on 6/8/2012 service!!

It must have just come in then , borderline , you need to speak to the garage that did it ... If the engine had gone you would be needing to chase that route .

Thanks Clan - but it's easier to just replace it myself given the time lapse and your comment that it must just have come in at the time the service was carried out. There is also the potential excuse/reason for the original omission that the tensioner replacement item and check box was offset to the right from the general list of 54000 items. The technician had used a highligher to draw a line down the 54000 check items and because the tensioner replacement item was offset the line didn't pass through it. Not much of an excuse but .....

Also not particularly impressed by the indi who did the 108000 service not the standard of the work (apart from the tensioner) just the pricing so don't really want to go to them again.

Just a quick update on the tensioner.
Now newly armed with my T60 Torx I'm just waiting for the new tensioner to arrive from Volvopartstrade. Again a huge thank you to Rooster for spotting car still had the original faulty tensioner fitted and for Clan for his (as always) helpful and welcome advice.
Thank you both (not forgetting Sash of course for selling me the cambelt guard).
