The fuel filter is located under he floor just in front of the offside rear wheel near the sill.
If it doesn't go after that you need to check to see if the pump is actually delivering fuel to the engine.
Sometimes old pumps don't like being run dry and it can knacker them.
Have you actually checked there is a spark present as well ?

Cleaning the plugs does not guarantee they are all working .Also leads themselves can fail of course .
Misfiring does not sound like a fuel problem .I think the running out of fuel may be a red herring here .
Be careful to release the fuel pressure using the little valve in the line before the filter .Be prepared to catch any fuel with a cloth .The filters can be hard to get off the line .
If you are finally convinced it is the fuel pump ,i have got a good one from a 98 s70 ,which you could have for postage .

if your changing the fuel filter then get a new bracket as well as a filter, 99% the bracket will snap

A m just looking at a fuel pump on the table in front of me and the fuel has to pass through a very fine gauze filter before it even gets to the pump let alone the main fuel filter .The filter is so fine that I cannot see much muck ever being picked up out of the tank .
By the way, you can replace the filter strap with a big jubilee band .There is convenient hole in the bracket you can pass it through .Did it last week in fact .
Also don't be tempted to check spark by old fashioned grounding out .You could kill yourself with modern voltages !anyway a plug can fire outside the cylinder and not under compression .The way to test is with a timing light inserted in the circuit .Then ,if a spark is passing via the plug tip to ground ,the timing light will flash .It takes quite dim light to see the timing light flash .

Thanks for your replies, I'll change the filter this weekend and take it from there.
I removed the plug leads one by one and their was a difference on each one so it doesn't seem to be a particular cylinder. Thanks for the voltage warning the lest petrol engine i worked on didn't have computers running things and a misfire would have been an easy fix. Ian

My wife was driving the car today and it just stopped, some kind Australians pushed her to the side of the road, then I got the call and we towed the car home.
When I tried to start it, it was catching and would run for about 2 seconds on about 3 cylinders, I then switched on the ignition till the fuel pump stopped I did this four times, then i cranked the engine and it started and it runs ok on constant revs but misfires when accelerating the revs I am going to do the filter anyway but any ideas beyond that would welcome. Thanks Ian

Your car at 1997 is just in the difficult era when they were not fully On Board Diagnostic 2 compliant and had a system called vol-fcr .
To use it you need a laptop which can take a small cd .Then you connect up to the plug in the centre console ,open the programme and see what faults you get coming out .
I have got a version of this lying idle at the moment .I could post it to you and you should get a handle on the problem if it is electronic .If there are no fault codes then at least you are down to basic stuff like fuel supply etc .
By the way is it a 2.0 litre 10 valve? .I hope, not as this engine ecu does not respond to to Vol-fcr but has to read by "flash codes ",which i won't trouble you with unless necessary .
Just send me an address if you would like to borrow it .

If it has "DOHC" written on the rocker cover, it's a 10v. "20 Valve" well... Means 20
