Always change your fuel filter
For anyone thinking of not changing their Volvo C30 D5 filter because it's a bit of a pain to get off/find on the 2008 D5..think again:

Second that.
Fuel filter on these engines is a consumable, like tyres. You MUST change it or the engine will start to cut out etc and throw "low fuel pressure" codes. |

We've had a fair bit of issues over the winter pre-grounded times in plant with filters bogging up. The general feeling was to high a % of bio-diesel being added to the derv and it was waxing in the cold. Long story short I've seen dozers with the filter like yours there and only 100 hours or so on the meter and they're black as that if not worse. So I got to say You can't change them to often. Personally I do all filters on my crappy30 every 6.5K as well obviously as oil. Even though the fuel filter I believe is something like 25k +intervals according to volvo.

Do you need a diesel hand pump to change the fuel filter?

Not on the Volvo engine D5/D4/D3, though you will need to make sure your battery is good for lots of cranking afterwards.
2.0d and 1.6d Ford engines will need a hand primer to bring back to life. |

Regularly changed diesel filter
I bought my V50 2007 last year, it was often going into limp mode, I was told that there was a fault with the on board computer which I cleaned and checked as ok, there were always air bubbles in the fuel line and so it seemed obvious to me that the filter was blocked. Changing it got rid of the limp mode problem straight away and has been ok for the last 7 months.

My V50 has a 1.6 D2 Ford engine. I always plug the fuel lines (using rubber glove finger) after disconnecting from the filter. Before reconnecting, I fill the filter to the top with diesel. The car has never 'struggled' to start.
