If you want space then it has to be the V70. Saloon boots will start to annoy you very quickly, it's the opening that restricts rather than the actual boot size itself. For family life the V70 wins every time.

You mention the S40 T5 but not the V50 T5 - that would give you the practicality of an estate but on a smaller scale than a V70...just a thought!
I agree entirely about the boot thing - we had estates (V40, V50) but never needed a really large one (like the V70) and then wondered if we really needed one at all (only 2 of us). So we traded the V50 for an S40, on the basis that the floor area of the boot is the same as the V50. But between the reduced loading hatch and the limitation of the framework when the back seats were down, we soon went back to en estate - currently have the V60. Given you are talking about kids as well I'd say go for an estate of some form every time. David

Just remember an S40/V50 T5 is a 2.5 engine shared with the Ford Focus ST and not the same T5 as used in the 70 series cars. It's not a biggy, but it is a different engine so thought you'd like to know. The V50 isn't a big estate and ours is regularly full with gear as it's not a big car. The boot will take the pram and a weekly shop but that's it, it's full after that and the storage inside is awful, especially on early cars which have front door pockets so small even my phone won't fit in them and they have no door pockets in the back at all. The benefit to the Focus engine is the modification potential, there are many many aftermarket bits for these engines meaning you can have a practical estate with serious power and a much nicer interior than a Ford! 400 bhp is possible from a V50 T5 engine but even a stage 1 map, bigger intercooler, decent exhaust and a metal plenum (the plastic ones can crack) will see you nudge 300 up from 220 bhp standard. Get lucky and you may even find an AWD one

And also I'll be selling the c70 if anyone interested it has bk racing coilovers uprated discs and pads molten exhaust and it's a manual gt model it will just have had a new steering rack driveshaft all done this week and I would like to think it's worth £1000 but open to sensible offers anyway thanks to all the guys for your advice

£3000 for an 08 S40 T5 is a good price, nothing to be concerned about there. Most people who want this kind of car want a diesel one so a 5 pot petrol with a 20 MPG thirst isn't going to hold its value well sadly

Whilst the S40/V50 looks smart, for performance I'd get the 2.4 engine T5 in V70 (or S60) guise. I think the 2.4 T5 which is the engine to have was in the 2005/2006 cars. They are known to be strong, great for tuning and common for the R owners to drop the 2.4 T5 engine in when they experience problems with the 2.5 R engine.

Be aware that in March 2006 the road tax for auto v70 t5s went up from £295 to £500 per annum, so the cheaper tax applies to cars registered before March 2006.
