That sort of comment really annoys me. Useless and uninformed.

Have you sat in any of the latest range of Volvo's might I ask? I am sure you will see how they are well up to the standards of perceived 'prestige' German brands, even surpassing them in areas such as cabin quality, infotainment and overall design.

No matter the number of cylinders, it's the torque numbers that matter. However, Volvo will not succeed any soon in the luxury sedan market. Not with their actual products any way. Mercedes is miles away and seems unstoppable at the moment. Why launching into this segment when they didn't even had a great selling car for the past 8 years?

Yes I have and indeed in your prestige German brands and I certainly would not pay 45k plus for any of them, just not worth the money in my opinion.

It depends upon your attitude to cars, do you regard them as a means of transport, comfortable and efficient, sporty etc or a status symbol that is used to proclaim your perceived wealth.

I baught a second hand volvo, which is the same car as when it cost 30 ish k new for less than half that, it's a Ford Mondeo with a D5 engine, good value at the price I paid at 30k ? not in my book.

I have, and have had on long-term loan the new S/V90, both are impressive vehicles, but the context within the UK market is important as the majority of the E segment (the segment the S/V90 inhabits) has been dominated by the Germans for a very long time - the volume makers - e.g Ford (Scorpio) GM (Omega) deserted the segment long ago.

Subjective quality is high on the new Volvos, whether objective quality measures up to the Germans is something only time will tell. Resale values will be critical to fleet success (as it is with any). Fleets are the biggest purchasers of E Segment products, and the British tend to buy brands rather than products.

Jon.

N.B the comment about £45k + for a Volvo. My recently acquired 965 was over £30k new in 1991, that's an inflation adjusted £60k ! And remember if there are no buyers for new Volvos there'll be no nice, value for money, pre-owned or classic ones !

Agreed Jon, however much as I like Volvo's and am on my 4th I am not blind to other makes either. I have told how I walked away from a new volvo circa 34k because they would not let me downgrade the seating to cloth bare in mind I was prepared to pay the equivalent of upgrading cloth to leather, £1500 at that time, but 2 dealers told me it could not be done so I walked away and would of from any manufacturer whom did similar.
There are car manufacturers whom offer excellent value for money and do not trade on a reputation previously gained and no longer deserved as some do in my opinion.

Regarding the point about £45000 Volvos there are a few nearly new examples at around £30000. There is a D4 Momentum with asking price of £28500 and one at £28995. Look like good value to me. Personally I might be looking at a good used example when 2-3 year old cars start coming on the market. (Seen on Autotrader)

I would expand that to any vehicle used for personal transport. If you, or more likely your company has £45k plus to spend on something which at that price point is nothing more than a status symbol, then fine, but its not for me.
I am much better off with a 3-4 year old vehicle that has someone else has taken the severe hit of 50% or so depreciation on.
