Hi all,

For anyone who is interested, I have recently replaced both outer CV joints on my 1998 V70 T5 Auto, using JR91 CV joints which are available from https://www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk

I started by bending my 1/2 drive breaker bar when getting the wheel nut off. Eventually I bought a long 3/4 drive breaker and socket. No messing.

I had a lot of trouble initially seeing when the joint was still in the car, then getting the outer joint off. Maybe my attempts at releasing the circlip and then hammering the joint messed the circlip up.

Anyway, with the joint held upright in a WorkMate I still couldn't get it to release so I ended up cutting the joint apart (cut the middle cage, remove the balls when you can, the outer drum will fall off, then you can carefully cut the inner part apart.

Then put it back together, with the new outer joint.

I also fitted new seals (gaskets) that sit between the wheel bearing and the knuckle.

That part is only mentioned in a few places, possibly for AWDs and I think gives better protection of the inner side of the wheel bearing.
I packed that empty space with ordinary grease.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Hi all

Attached photo shows what the inner side of the wheel bearing ends up looking like without the extra protection given by that gasket. (Time will tell).

(I replaced wheel bearings on both sides while I was at it).

The biggest problem was getting the circlip to release the outer joint.
