Default air con clicking sound problem

Am hoping someone can help but I have recently started having a problem with my L R eg 440 se. Of late there is an intermittent clicking sound fron the audio system/heating control panel. I'm not 100% sure but I think that it could be related to the airon cos after a click the car power drops as if the aircon has been sudddely started (even though I dont touch the air con control panel). Any ideas what the problem could be or how to fix?

The aircon compressor doesn't work constantly. It goes on and off dependend on the pressure from the refrigerant inside the system. After a couple of years the system looses it's refrigerant, 10% loss a year is normal. So could be that the system needs refilling, it needs a fresh charge about every 2-3 years. How is the temp. of the air coming out of the vents when the airco is on full blast? Can it still keep the interior cool enough on a hot day?

A 400 is remarkably leak free in the AC system they normaly work 10 years + without attention . anything which needs attention every few years has some kind of external leak ..

Thanks for the replies.

I rarely use the aircon but after your question, I switched it on and there was definitely cold air being blown in.

Can the aircon kick in automatically even if the switch is off? That's what seems to be happening? Is there a easy way to fix the problem?

Just remove the fuse for te aircon to see if that helps. It's a 30amp fuse located at pos. #14 in the fuse box iirc.

I did think of taking out the fuse but when I looked at the fuse area (beneath the steering wheel) I saw that the position that air con fuse was also used for some other things like lights etc. so I thought it wise not to remove it. I will give it a go tomorrow and see how it goes. Thanks.

Here you can download the wiring digram. At one of the first pages you can find the lay out of the oval relay box. Look up the position of the aircon relay, remove that one instead of the fuse and only the aircon compressor is off.

Heh was just talking about this yesterday to my brother how my 460s aircon still worked fine when I sold it at 13 years old (would've benefitted from a regas though I think). C70s has got a leak in it somewhere and the gas in the 760s probably escaped when people were getting worried about the O-zone layer!

B20F - Unfortunately, none of the download links worked and I actually have a 440, not a 480. Anyhow, I've attached a copy of the fuse diagram from the car which indicates that slot 17 is the one for aircon which is also used by other parts. Can I really remove this fuse safely or are you suggesting to remove the fuse in slot 24 (aircon compressor)? Thanks.

BTW I removed the air con compressor fuse and the problem stopped. :-)

That means no air con anymore but I never really used it anyhow. Thanks for the replies.
